print technology - answers to some questions

-->Did you make all of these?

Yes, I did.

-->How did you make them?

I used a computer and a some commercially available programs. For the 3-D images, I begin by building a scene made up of geometric shapes. Then I put textures on them, arrange them and light them. Once the scene is complete, I compose the picture through the software camera tool and render it.

For the abstract pieces, I generally use Photoshop in much the same way a traditional painter uses paint or other materials. I use the standard filters to develop and modify the work.

-->What programs do you use?

Bryce 3D, Photoshop, P.O.V. Ray, Strata 3D and Illustrator.

-->How long does it take you to make one?

Anywhere from 15 minutes to a month. Sometimes the "rendering" part can take days. Then the image is modified or prepared in Photoshop for printing.

-->How do you make the prints?

ICompare ink techniques.nk jet—the same technology that is also used by the Giclee or Iris printer. Recent advances have made the colors deeper and richer, the resolution and clarity higher. The inks have increased light fastness, giving prints a potential longevity of 75 years. I made the prints on an Epson 1520, which uses Piezo inks at 1440 dpi. They are sprayed directly on the paper without heating, unlike thermal printers. (An example of the difference in quality is shown in here.) I also use Epson Photo Quality ink jet papers, which are acid free (ph 7 or greater) and Hahnemuhle ink jet papers, also acid free. In addition, each piece comes with care instructions and a certificate of authenticity.

-->What is the longevity (or light fastness) of the print?

If you use UV resistant glass or plexiglass and archival materials, you can safely expect your print to retain it's vibrancy for a lifetime. The inks are water based and the papers are high quality acid free papers made especially for digital printing. Tests for light fastness of materials are being conducted by Wilhelm Imaging Research, Inc.
